Merry ThanksChristmas

This week, we traveled to Ponca City to celebrate not just Thanksgiving but also Christmas, and all the family traditions that come with both holidays, in one busy long weekend! Since our family is traveling to Connecticut for Christmas and Brandon's brother Nathan and his wife, Dana, will be visiting her family for Christmas we thought we mayaswell enjoy as much holiday while we are all togeher as we possibly can! Glenda's sister, Aunt Beck, and her daughter Lauren flew in and Uncle Tyler and his girlfriend, April, were also there! It was a full house and alot of fun!

First things first, Wednesday night the boys helped Noni out by putting up a few ornaments on her Christmas tree! The decorating the boys did was all that ended up getting done this weekend and granted the only ornaments on the tree were at the boys eye level but they enjoyed doing their own decorating and thought it was quite beautiful!

Then, Thursday, when Uncle Nay-Nay and Aunt Dana arrived they let the boys choose one present to open a day early!! Ashtyn opened a Star Wars themed digital camera and...

Maddox opened a marshmallow gun!!! The gun is really cool! It loads and shoots mini marshmallows and they actually shoot really far! We all had alot of fun in the backyard with this gift! As you can tell, though, from the look on Maddox's face we had our first "That's not what I wanted moment!" when Maddox saw that Ashtyn opened something with Star Wars on it and he didn't. My stomach turned over when Maddox made such a sour face and crossed his arms announcing "I wanted Star Wars!!" In the end, though, they both enjoyed their early opened gifts and sort of ended up trading and sharing both gifts back and forth! (With a bit of coercing that is...)

I had to sneak in a bit of Wiles family tradition this weekend by insisting that the Thanksgiving Day Parade stay on...even if it was on the tiny TV upstairs while the flatscreen downstairs stayed tuned into football! But that's a-okay with me! The boys, of course, didn't sit and watch the entire parade but they did pop in and out from time to time. I called for them when Santa was about to pass by and they both settled in to watch! I explained that this was the REAL Santa! The ONE that would be bringing them their presents! Ash was quite excited to see the REAL Santa Clause and waited with great anticipation! When Santa finally made his appearance Ash let out a huge exclamation and smiled! As the camera zoomed in however Ashtyn's smile faded and as he furrowed his brow he said "Why are those reindeer fake?" Uh Oh. I scrambled to come up with something and eventually told Ash that the real reindeer have to stay at the North Pole and rest because it's almost Christmas. Fingers crossed...he bought it!!! Luckily, he's still young enough that what mama says must be true but he sure notices the details! Sigh.

Then it was back outside for more marshmallow gun fun!!

If there was one word that could best describe our holiday weekend in Ponca City it would be "cards"! We played more card games with the boys then you can count! Using a normal deck of cards we managed to play Go Fish, Old Maid, SlapJack, War, Memory and probably more games I'm not thinking of right now. I think we all got our fair share of childhood card games!

Friday morning (which is the day we actually did Thanksgiving and Christmas all in one) Uncle Nay-Nay and Aunt Dana took the boys outside for a bit of pretend play! They decided to play "pirates" and when Aunt Dana and Maddox locked themselves in the shed Ashtyn and Uncle Nay-Nay had to find their own way inside...

Then...back to cards!

Ashtyn and I enjoyed some quiet time too while looking through an I-Spy book! Both the boys received an I-Spy book this week. Ashtyn's is Christmas themed and Maddox's is superheroes. They are actually pretty tough!

Maddox took some time out to play with Uncle Tyler, April and of course...Elvis!

After a pretty quick Thanksgiving Dinner (because the boys were so anxious to open gifts...can you blame em????) we all gathered around the half decorated christmas tree to sort and open gifts! The boys helped hand out the presents and then eagerly opened their own. Ash and Maddox are complete opposites in everything including in how they open presents. Ashtyn quickly tears open each gift and sets it to the side rapidly moving onto the next gift until all his presents are open. I don't even think he knows what he has received until everything is open and he goes back to look through his pile! If you're looking for someone who gets excited over a new toy as he's opening it then he's not your kid. For him, it's more about tearing through the paper and going really fast and enjoying his new toys later. Maddox, however, slowly and carefully opens each package. When he sees what is inside he exclaims with huge smiles and even hugs his new toy. Then he travels around the room showing each person what he has received ending it all by asking daddy to open his new toy. He then plays with his new toy for a moment before moving on to opening another gift! It seriously takes Maddox FOREVER to open all of his gifts. Once everyone is long done opening their gifts and all the paper is picked up Maddox is still sitting with a stack of gifts to open! I guess he savors each moment!!

Uncle Tyler and April gave the boys a nerf bow and arrow and a duck hunt game with a battery powered duck that actually flies and a gun that shoots at it and when you get a direct hit causes the duck to fall to the ground! Of course, the boys wanted to try these gifts out so we took them to the front yard! The bow and arrow actually shoots REALLY far and the duck hunt game works...but we learned an important lesson. Don't fly the duck when it's windy outside! As soon as the duck took off into the sky it flew higher and higher until it was literally flying away!! It took probably 20 or 30 minutes to find the duck in another person's backyard across the alley and about three houses down! WOW! We will be more careful next time!

We had a really fun weekend at Noni and Papa's house! We ended our holiday packed weekend with a drive around town to look at Christmas lights while the boys sang songs from their upcoming Christmas programs at church! It was really sweet and alot of fun! Now we are back home about to unpack and clean up and the countdown to our road trip to Connecticut begins...
