shopping for self

While I was confined to my bed last week recovering from having my wisdom teeth removed, Noni came to stay for a couple of days and help out with the house and kids. One of the days that Noni was here Ashtyn brought home a packet in his school backpack explaining that Ashtyn could participate in a Santa Shop where you send money to school with Ash and volunteers would help him shop for gifts for his family!! They set up tables of gifts ranging in price from $2 to $10 and you fill out a form telling the teachers who your child needs to buy for and how much you want them to spend on each person and then they get to shop and wrap their gifts to bring home! Well, Noni was nice enough to slip some money into Ashtyn's envelope and she filled out that Ashtyn should purchase a gift for his mommy, daddy and brother splitting the money evenly among the three!! Well, I have to admit that I've been kind of excited all week wondering when Ash would get to go "shopping" and what he would pick out for each of us! So, today when I picked him up from school Ashtyn excitedly exclaimed "I got to shop today!!" I was pumped!! I eagerly responded "Oooooh! Did you get presents for mom, dad and Maddox?" Ash looked a bit confused and then said so matter of factly "No! I just bought some toys for myself!" I was shocked! "What?" I asked!!! "You were supposed to buy gifts for your family!" Wanting to make sure he wasn't in trouble, Ashtyn replied "But my friend Noah said it was OK for me to pick out stuff for myself!" Trying to hide my disappointment that I would not be getting a gift I went on to ask Ash what he bought. Turns out he bought 5 or 6 little toys including a light up bouncy ball and oversized writing pen and a floppy frisbee!! Oh well...I guess we'll have to wait until next year's Santa Shop and hope for more gifts to go around...HA!!

To a 5 year old, they are the center of the universe. So it makes total sense to use the money for himself. I bet he would share if you ask him nicely!
