"Nature looks dead in winter because her life is gathered into her heart. She withers the plant down to the root that she may grow it up again fairer and stronger. She calls her family together within her inmost home to prepare them for being scattered abroad upon the face of the earth." Hugh Macmillan

mary mary quite contrary
Today, we took advantage of the sunshine and mild temps and finished building and planting our brand new vegetable garden!! We hadn't planned on doing that today but once we got home from church and got outside and started getting our hands dirty messing with the garden we decided to go ahead and take at trip to Lowe's and get busy!! YEA!! Once we got to Lowe's, though, in true form we found more then just vegetables to work on! We also found a tree to plant in our front yard! We've been wanting to plant a tree since we moved here over a year ago but just haven't gotten around to it...so today was the perfect opportunity! We decided on a weeping willow. It grows fast and will provide shade once it's fully grown! The only problem...we had driven the mini-van! HA!! Brandon was able to get that tree in there somehow though! The boys got a kick out of it!!! Ashtyn kept saying we were in a "jungle"!!!

We got home and got to work!! The boys thought the tomato cages were pretty interesting...
Brandon finished sectioning off the garden before we started planting.

We bought a vareity of vegetables and herbs for our first ever garden. Brandon wanted salsa ingredients so we planted tomatoes, bell peppers, banana peppers and hot peppers while the boys chose some plants of their own like sweet corn, green beans, canteloupe and okra! (OK...I chose the okra! HE HE!) We also planted some sunflowers and went ahead and planted a couple pumpkins. We're not totally sure the pumpkins will grow because we really didn't have the space for them but the boys really wanted to try it and so we figured at $2 bucks for a pack of seeds we'd give it a shot!! Why not!?!? Right?? The boys really got into helping me plant all our seeds! It was fun!!!

Hmph! Doesn't look any different then before we planted all our seeds. I guess I knew that it wouldn't since all the seeds are under ground (duh!) but still...it's hard to believe that something is actually going to grow here! Fingers crossed!!!
While I went in to fix dinner and the boys played outside, Brandon finished planting all of our new stuff!!
Looks good huh!!?? I made taco salad for dinner and as I diced up a tomato to top our salads I dreamed of the day I could simply walk into my back yard and pick a tomato from one of our own plants! Hopefully that day comes sooner then later!

I feel the same way about salsa! I told Brandon late last night..."OK, I'm gonna go out in the garden tomorrow and pick some veggies!" HA!!! I think it'll be a few months, but I'm already ready!
You are soooo cute! Little missy homemaker! I am so proud of you and your little family. Hey! What's with the Marigolds? Pest control?
Yes! Glenda told me that marigolds keep the bugs out (or at least that's what she had been told) so we thought we'd try it! I filled my neighbor in on the secret today!
