the year of the yard

Yesterday, Brandon's office was closed and so he was able to stay home!! YEA!! This weekend we were planning on spring cleaning so we took the opportunity to get a jump start and had spring cleaning day #1!! Brandon cleaned out the garage while I organized the closets and cabinets inside. Also, on our spring cleaning list for this year was building a small deck in our backyard as well as completing our privacy fence by doing the last side of our yard! FINALLY!! YIPEEE!! Yesterday, Brandon was able to start on the deck! We were all so excited to see progress begin to be made and we all look forward to grilling our first steaks and eating on our brand new outdoor space!! Won't be long!!
Maddox tried to "help" daddy with the deck but eventually just stole some tools and went to work on his car...

Finally, the first phase of the new deck began to take shape!!

After the boys were bathed and in bed this portion of the deck was complete!! Sure, it's only big enough for one or two people to stand on at a time and, as of yet, we can't put our patio furniture or our grill on it, but it's a start!! Where Brandon is standing is just the part of the deck that you will walk onto as you walk out the back door...then you will step up one step onto the 12X16 portion of the deck!! BEEE-AUTIFUL!!

Brandon had to go back to work today but this evening and tomorrow I'm sure we will be making more trips to Lowe's and make more head way on our new, wonderful deck!! When my dad comes to visit in April we will be finishing our privacy fence...but the man from the city came out yesterday and marked where we can dig so Brandon will probably start digging holes for the new fence as soon as possible!! I'll admit it...I just LOVE spring time!! Even the spring cleaning part!!

Like I said, I completely re-organized the house yesterday!! It took pretty much all day but it's done and the house just "feels" different!! During my mad organizing I framed a couple of new things for the laundry room wall. The top one is a page from a magazine called Home Made Simple. Every month this magazine has a section where they ask a question and readers send in their short answers! I always send in my answer and anticipate getting next month's issue thinking maybe this time I'll find my answer printed in black and white. Well...guess what!?!? In March's issue my answer could be found within the pages of Home Made Simple! Of course, I tore the page out and framed it! The second frame is something really cool!! A few months ago when Brandon was in the attic he found a folded up, and greatly aged piece of paper between the rafter boards. He brought it down and we opened it up. It's VERY fragile. Turns out it's an old draft letter from the military giving orders to 2 or 3 men on when they have to show up for active duty!! It even has in there what base they need to report to, what they should be wearing when they arrive and what they can bring with them! It tells them how long their deployment is and when they will have leave to visit their families. It's complete with social security numbers and all!! You can read most of the letter as, even though it is typed, it is written in some form of shorthand and uses lots of codes but you can get the basic idea of what they are saying. I think it's really cool to find a piece of history like that in your attic...it's like something you would see in the movies!! When I have a free afternoon I'm planning on googling these men to see what I can learn!! Pretty cool huh!?!?

Anyway, spring cleaning day #1 was overly productive but today and tomorrow aren't any less scheduled. Today, even though Brandon is at work, I'm planning on cleaning the windows (inside and out), cleaning out the car and finishing my deep clean of the inside of the house!! Then tonight it's back to Lowe's for more supplies so that as soon as the sun comes up tomorrow we can hit the ground running! It's the most wonderful time of the year!!!!!!

I think he misses her too! When I got home from the zoo the other day he asked "How was Elia?" Now, why would a guy ask that before even asking how the new children's exhibit was??? She's charmed her uncle!! Hopefully we'll get our deck done in the next few days and you all can come down and we can grill out! :)

Yes, I remember the days when I had the energy to spring clean in less than a week! My body just won't let me do that anymore. It's almost like a perpetual spring cleaning process now ... you do one job then wait a few weeks then do another job and wait a few weeks then do another job and wait .... I think you get the picture.

I am so anxious to enjoy the deck. What Brandon has done so far looks great.

Tell Maddox that I can't wait to see his playroom..... :)

Tell Ashtyn that I've been practicing the Wii tennis but just not as good as he is.
