ostrich egg anyone?

Yesterday was the annual Ostrich Egg Breakfast at the OKC Zoo!! Last year was the first year we attended and we were excited to go again!! During the breakfast the zoo opens at 8AM where they serve krispy kreme donuts, belgian waffles and ostrich egg omelets. None of us are brave enough to try the ostrich eggs (not to mention patient enough to stand in the EXTREMELY long line for an ostrich egg) and so we opt for the much shorter line and still very yummy breakfast of waffles and donuts!! The boys even got krispy kreme hats!! Ashtyn said "Mom! Now I'm a baker!"

After finishing our early breakfast we started walking around the exploring the zoo! Since we had left for the zoo at 7:30AM and were one of the first ones in line to eat we were able to stroll through the zoo virtually alone! It was almost as if we were the only ones there! It was so relaxing! The animals were all out in the cool of the morning for us to see and we could take our time standing in front of each animal exhibit and not feel rushed or inconsiderate! It was awesome!

When we entered the bat and owl barn it was weird to see that the lights were on! Usually, the barn is very dark with just a few black lights on but today it was bright white! Then we noticed that the bat cage door was opening and soon followed a zoo employee! Yikes! We couldn't believe a person would go in there! She cleaned out the bat cage and fed them! It was neat to watch but I wish I could have caught in a photo the insanity inside the cage the moment the worker entered the room! I mean...those bats went EVERYWHERE!!! They were flying all around! It didn't phase the zoo worker one bit though! Eeeek!

Included in the Ostrich Egg Breakfast admission was one sea lion show! Ashtyn couldn't wait to get in! We sat just above the splash zone as it was a bit chilly and rainy out. The show was short but really good! One sea lion inparticular wasn't quite interested in doing a show that day and kept disobeidently swimming around the pool and refusing to do tricks! It was actually pretty funny!

We finished out our morning at the zoo with a fresh squeezed lemonaide and pretzel! Mmmmm! Then we hit the gift shop where the boys each got a telescope and zoobooks magazine!

Okay...so even though we paid $30 bucks for a couple krispie kreme donuts, waffles and chocolate milk cartons it was a really fun morning and a fun time as a family!

I also thought about submitting that pic to the zoo calendar contest! They hold it each year and anyone can submit something! It might make a funny calendar photo!
