"Nature looks dead in winter because her life is gathered into her heart. She withers the plant down to the root that she may grow it up again fairer and stronger. She calls her family together within her inmost home to prepare them for being scattered abroad upon the face of the earth." Hugh Macmillan

sigh of relief!!
It was a memory making day in the Knight house!! Today BOTH my boys starting school!! WOW!! I dreaded this day all summer long. I even had nightmares about it. But when it was all said and done it wasn't that bad! Yep! You heard me! It wasn't that bad! One thing that absolutely WILL NOT be exciting about school (besides my baby's being out of the house) is the alarm clock. Ugh. The boys have only been in school one day and I couldn't be happier it's Friday cause I'm already ready for the weekend! HA!! Anyway, after I got up at the crack of dawn (actually the crack of darkness!) and got myself ready I started waking up the boys. Maddox looked so sweet, though, snuggled in mommy's bed that I didn't want to wake him up. I knew I had to but he looked exactly as he did as a baby laying in his crib. I know, I know, I got all sentimental but I couldn't help it...
Ashtyn didn't want to wake up either. I think especially since he goes to school in the afternoon he didn't understand why he had to wake up but he has to go with me to take Maddox to school first thing in the morning so we ALL had to get up and around.

Maddox ate about half a bowl of cereal for breakfast and half a granola bar...
then he got mad and growled at me when he noticed I was taking pictures of him eating his breakfast! I'm sorry! I just wanted to document every moment of his first day of school!
When I told Maddox it was time to brush his teeth he whined and fussed and finally crawled, on his hands and knees, all the way from the sofa to the bathroom!! He DID NOT want to get dressed but we finally got him all ready! He looks so cute! He is holding a laminated handprint that his teacher gave us at meet the teacher night and we were told to put a family picture on the palm of the hand. This was for Maddox to carry to school with him on the first day so that he wouldn't be scared and then he gets to keep it in his cubby in his classroom and anytime during the school year that he misses mom and dad he can hold his "family hand" to feel comforted!
Still clutching his special hand we waited in line to drop Maddox off at school. As we rounded the corner and approached the front of the school Maddox said "I think I'm scared..." but that's the only bit of nervousness I saw from Maddox today! When the teacher opened the van door he got right out, held her hand and walked into the building. I even yelled after him "I love you!" and he didn't even turn around! I have to admit that it was almost just as sad to see my baby going into school bravely as it would have been to have him clutching my leg and refusing to go. He's so grown up.
After we picked up Maddox from school we went straight home, ate lunch and then it was Ashtyn's turn for afternoon kindergarten! He had no nerves whatsoever and actually when I pulled up to the school to drop him off I asked him if he remembered where is classroom was to which he replied with a sigh "Yes mom...I know where it is." Ashtyn didn't want me to walk him in or even take his picture. I think he's getting a bit tired of all the pictures mommy takes but I'll sneak a few more in soon!
Now, it's 3:30 and both my boys are back home! Maddox said his favorite part of school was "all of it" (except that he didn't get to ride a tricycle at recess...) and Ashtyn's favorite part was "centers". Maddox said he didn't make any friends and Ashtyn said he has two new friends, a boy and a girl, but he couldn't remember their names! My boys are oh so different but they both did great today! I know that they'll be days this year that they don't want to go to school and our schedule will only get crazier and that annoying alarm will go off way too early every morning for the next 180 days but at this moment I couldn't be more proud of my boys or more relieved at how today went!

The boys look spiffy!
I am so very proud that they both had fantastic first days!
Erika, I think we are both floating in the same boat ... I cannot help but let tears fall whenever I think about how fast they are growing up!
