"Nature looks dead in winter because her life is gathered into her heart. She withers the plant down to the root that she may grow it up again fairer and stronger. She calls her family together within her inmost home to prepare them for being scattered abroad upon the face of the earth." Hugh Macmillan

tolerant be or not tolerant be...???
Being that he's in Kindergarten, Maddox doesn't bring home that much homework. Every now and then we have something we have to do at home but for the most part we just receive the work he does at his desk at school. It's always fun to see how Maddox's cutting skills and printing skills are improving and, of course, both my boys love when we make a big deal out of how well they're doing in school!! Well, recently, Maddox brought home this worksheet that he did during his day at school. He had to cut out pictures, match them to the given word and then print that same word next to the picture. Maddox did a great job but I couldn't help but be a bit shocked when I saw one of the specific words that Maddox had to learn and write...do you see it!? That's right, Maddox had to cut out a picture of and then write the word "FAT". Hmmmm...I'm not sure how I feel about that. We don't even let our kids say that word!! I just don't think it's a nice word and can so easily be used as a "name" against someone. It's a hurtful word...but there it was on my Kindergartener's homework page. Weird. It wasn't worth a call to Maddox's teacher or anything and I didn't even bring it up to Maddox...I figured he wouldn't even remember it after a day, if he even remembered it at all but it just seems odd that the world we live in screams TOLERANCE from the roof tops and everything is so politically correct and then at age 5 they're showing you a picture of an overweight person and having you write the word "fat" next to it. It just struck me as a bit "off"...
