Of all the things that I thought I would struggle doing in Colorado (i.e. sledding, tubing, skiing, etc) the one thing, and I mean the ONE thing, that I never comprehended I would have a hard time doing it was...BREATHING!!!!!!!!! I mean seriously!!!!!!!!!! As we drove through Denver and our little Prius began climbing the hills toward our cabin in the Colorado mountains I began to feel the weight of no oxygen on my lungs. I've heard people say that you have to get used to breathing at high elevations but I never knew what that meant until this weekend. In fact, it wasn't simply that I had a hard time breathing I really couldn't breath AT ALL. Our first night in the cabin I woke up every half hour, if I even fully fell asleep at all, gasping for air and actually having to think about each breath. It was awful. Thankfully, Uncle Nathan and Aunt Dana had suggested not skiing on our first day in Colorado and instead going sledding and tubing so that we could get acclamated with our new 9,000+ foot elevation and hopefully learn to breath a bit better. Oh, and we also learned really quickly that you get way thirstier way faster in the mountains too! Wow, we learned so much! Ha!
As we were getting dressed to go sledding I couldn't resist taking pictures of the boys as they layered up!! It was the first time we had put on all their snow gear and they looked so cute!! We got each of the boys long underwear before our trip but Maddox kept referring to them as "big underwear" and he wouldn't let anyone see him in it!!
The boys were dressed first and pretty impatient to leave so they hung out on the wrap around porch while all us slow-poke-grown-ups got dressed.
Finally, we were ready to go!!!! Let's get this show on the road!!!!
First, we drove to the free sledding hills. We had reservations to go tubing at a nearby "paid" hill but it wasn't our scheduled time yet so we brought along our own personal sleds and spent some time on the bumpy, icy hills! Someone had even built snow ramps into the hill at some point and after we worked up the nerve we ramped our blow-up sleds and caught some air!! I think of everyone, Maddox was probably the most brave. (Surprised? Me neither...)
Whoa!!!!
We rode the sleds so hard that we literally blew a hole into both of them!! They were fun while they lasted, though, and so once the sleds were "flat" we took a break for a picnic lunch of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches while the boys made snow angels and started a sneak-attack snow ball fight!!
Finally, it was our turn to go tubing!! I wasn't sure what to expect with the whole tubing thing but it turned out to be ALOT of fun!! You paid for an hour of time and could tube down as many times as you possibly could and on any of these different hills. There was even a magic carpet to transport you and your tube back to the top of the hill! Fun!!!!

We went down the hills a couple of times by ourselves and then found out that you can go down in pairs or even groups of four!! Your tubes had these straps on them that you could interlock with each others and then go down together!! You went SO fast when you went in groups!! We took a video of our family going down in a group but Brandon has it on his phone and so I'll post it sometime this week! You'll wanna see this, so check back soon!!
Our first full day in Colorado was alot of fun but even by the time we got done tubing I still wasn't breathing much easier then when we had first arrived. On one of our trips back up the hill to go tubing the magic carpet quit working and so we had to hike up the hill pulling our own tube and I literally had to stop walking about halfway up!! I mean, it was a big hill but if that same hill were in Oklahoma I could have walked up it with no problem...pulling THREE tubes!!! But here in Colorado I just couldn't get enough air. I was out of breath in no time. It was crazy! After tubing, we went back to our cabin for dinner and board games by the fire! It was a fun and memorable first day! Tomorrow...skiing...
