"Nature looks dead in winter because her life is gathered into her heart. She withers the plant down to the root that she may grow it up again fairer and stronger. She calls her family together within her inmost home to prepare them for being scattered abroad upon the face of the earth." Hugh Macmillan

geezer gumbo
Saturday was Brandon's 29th birthday and I thought it would be nice to make him one of his favorite meals...GUMBO!!!! This is a truly southern recipe that I had never tried to make by myself. His mom makes it but I was never really brave enough to try. Well, for B's birthday I decided to give it a shot and got the recipe from my mother-in-law. It took all afternoon to cook the gumbo but it sure did make the house smell good and, in the end, it was well worth the work! I can't promise it'll make my regular rotation of quick-cooking evening meals but I'm proud of myself for actually conquering it!!

By the time the gumbo was ready Brandon was hovering in the kitchen, looking over my shoulder and very eager to eat!! We served the gumbo over rice!! Mmmmmm!!

Happy Birthday Brandon!! Only one more year to 30!! :)
