Well...we knew it was coming we just didn't know how and when it would rear its ugly head...but finally, during his first grade year, ASH HAD TO GET GLASSES!!!! Both Brandon and I are blind so it will be very unlikely that either of our boys go through life without having to have glasses eventually, but Ash was first. His teacher told us about a month ago that Ash had been complaining that he couldn't see the board from his seat and she even had to move Ash to the front row for some assignments. I called that very week and made Ash an appointment. Unfortunately, the eye doctor didn't have an opening for over three weeks so we made the earliest appointment we could and waited. I tried my best to prepare Ash for what would happen at the eye doctor and he was so big and did so well! Every time the nurse or doctor asked him a question he answered like a big boy and he obeyed all of their requests. I was so proud!!
After they ran a couple of tests on Ashtyn's eyes, we moved to the eye exam room where Ash had to read letters off of the eye chart. I knew Ash was having a hard time seeing but when they put rather large letters up on the wall and Ash couldn't make them out I felt really bad for him. The doctor said Ash isn't so bad that it would effect him while playing outside or swimming, but he said that most definitely Ash hasn't been able to read the board at school and is probably struggling...poor guy...
The eye doctor was very nice! Ash actually said "that was fun!" when we left his appointment. We took Ashtyn's written prescription and went straight to a one hour eyemart express so that Ash could get glasses right away and see the next day at school!! Ash chose his very first pair of glasses all by himself. I'm not gonna lie...as a mom, I was worried that his "choice" would only beg other kids to make fun of him. I mean, kids can be so cruel as it is and then when your 7 year old chooses plastic frame glasses that are a bit "trendy" you worry that kids might be extra cruel. But Ash was insistent. I literally forced him to try on about 5 or 6 other pairs of glasses but he only wanted these ones. Brandon was quite proud!! Brandon has always been an individual and prides himself on the fact that "he was wearing these kind of glasses BEFORE they were cool..." and so when his son chose them too I think he felt alot of pride!! I can't blame him!! I'm proud of Ash for sticking to his guns and picking out what he likes!!
He's so very handsome!! After Ashtyn's first day at school with glasses he came home and said that all of his friend's like his new frames! I was proud, relieved, excited and so many other things. My baby is growing up way too fast and the fact that he has an opinion about his style and what he likes or dislikes is just further proof that he is growing way too fast. I love you Ash! I'm so very proud of you!
