The day before school started our local library hosted a really cool event called The Thunder Bus! I wasn't totally sure what to expect and to be honest I thought we were going to tour "the thunder bus"...you know, like the bus the Thunder Basketball team travels on!? Oops, my mistake...but it was still really cool! They only took a certain number of kids on the Thunder Bus and so you had to sign up early but we were lucky enough to get our names on the list!
When we arrived at the library we signed in and they gave each of the kids numbered stickers showing what order they would go onto the bus in. Ash and Maddox were numbers 7 and 8! Woohoo! We're at the front of the line! After some instruction from the Thunder Team Community Coordinator the kids were ready to get started. We lined up in groups of ten and headed out to the bus!
Instead of the "Thunder Bus" being a team bus it turned out to be a converted school bus painted in team colors that the Thunder Organization uses for community outreach programs. They take the bus to local libraries and let kids come on board and choose a book, in their specific reading level, that they get to KEEP!!The inside of the bus is decorated with a basketball court floor, a basketball hoop hanging at the back and all the seats have been removed and bookshelves stand where they used to be. The shelves are lined with more then 3,000 books arranged in reading level order and your child can choose and keep whichever story they like! So cool!
After we went on the Thunder Bus the library had set up several activities inside for the kids to participate in. First, we shot baskets! Ash made a shot on his first try and Maddox tried and tried until he finally sunk a shot! I was proud!
Then we made our very own bookmarks...
Ash decorated his with animals,
and Maddox wrote "Go Thunder" on his and drew a picture of Kevin Durant.
Then we painted and picked up some coloring and activity pages to take home with us. This late summer event at the library was awesome and something we'll definitely look forward to next year!
