We knew we were going to get some snow for over a week before it actually arrived. We have not seen a single snowflake fall here in Mustang ALL winter and I, personally, was getting pretty anxious about it. I love winter and I love the snow and so to think of a winter without even ONE snow day seemed so depressing!! Well, the weatherman told us that we would get something and they were right!! Last Sunday night the flakes began to fall and when we went to bed that night the ground was already white!! I couldn't wait for the boys to wake up in the morning and see a snow covered backyard!! I was hoping, too, that the boys would be out of school on Monday so that we could enjoy the sticky snow. I know our school district builds in a few snow days and considering it's so late in the winter season I sort of assumed that even if we got a little bit of snow they would go ahead and let the kids stay home (and let themselves stay home too!!) and enjoy a day off. I set my alarm anyway though when I went to bed, just in case...
When we woke up the next morning the boys were SO VERY excited to see all that snow!! We didn't have a blizzard by any means but we got a good 2-3 inches!! Enough to have fun in!! Unfortunately, though, the school system didn't agree and they didn't cancel school. We were REALLY bummed. I got the boys all dressed for school, snow boots and all, and then let them run thru the backyard a few times (and even throw a couple snow balls...) before they had to leave for the day.
The further the day went on the more I was getting worried that there wouldn't be any snow left to play in by the time the boys got home from school. I was really anxious for them to get home so we could at least throw a few snowballs. The temperatures rose above freezing and so much of the snow melted by 3PM and the backyard was more of a mixture of dirty snow and muddy yard by the time we got outside to play but we made the best of it and still had a pretty good snow ball fight!!
Even Aunt Kiki and Uncle Kevin got in on the fun!!
It's always fun to play in the snow but the only thing that can make that fun short lived is a long school day before you get to play. Maddox was SO tired from a full day of learning that it only took a few hits from someone else's snow balls and Maddox was breaking down into tears...
I was finally able to distract Maddox, though, by having him roll a GIANT snow ball that we could use as the base for our snowman! It helped put him in a much better mood and gave him something to focus on.
OK...so I know it's really REALLY sad but this is the best snow man we could come up with...he had some arms and eyes at first but it just didn't last long. Besides the fact that our snowman was part snow, part mud and part grass...there just wasn't enough snow to build anything really good. The yard looks so icky!!
I love the sight of a family of snow boots lined up inside the back door after a fun afternoon playing in the snow. It makes me smile!!
So we may not have gotten a snow day home from school and we may not have had a foot of snow to build an igloo but we sure had fun chasing each other with snowballs and building our squatty, melting little snowman. I'm not sure if we'll get any more snow this season or not. I sure HOPE we do but if we don't I'm at least glad that we got a few inches to make a winter memory!!
