second place

Last month the boys participated in the Pinewood Derby with their Royal Ranger group at church. This is our second year to compete in the derby and it really is so much fun! I think this is as much (if not more...) for the dads than it is the kids! You should see these dads when they bring home the Pinewood Derby kits! A block of wood, 4 wheels and nothing else but imagination! It's hilarious and awesome to see grown men get so into transforming these raw ingredients into racing machines! I even saw Brandon and another dad smack talking each other at church the weekend before the race! It was in good fun, of course, but still! The night of the race we showed up early, registered our cars and ate some yummy BBQ before the races began. This is serious business! There is a race track hooked up to a computer program that times each car during its heats and then averages all of the times to show who is in the finals. Maddox's car didn't make it to the final round but Ashtyn's did. In the end, neither of our boys won for speed but they BOTH came in second in design categories. Maddox took second place for Most Unique Design and Ashtyn took second place for Best Design. They each won a trophy and a Thunder basketball! I think they were happier to get the Thunder Basketball than first place anyway! I don't have any up close pictures of the cars but Maddox's car was a lego themed design with mini lego figure driver included! Ashtyn's car looked like a piece of bacon! Perfect for him!
